The Battle of Kursk:

The Battle of Kursk took place in the summer of 1943 and was one of the most significant battles of the Eastern Front and the Second World War. It remains the largest armored engagement of all time, and included the most costly single day of aerial warfare in history. Though the Germans planned and initiated an offensive strike, the Soviet defense managed to stop their ambitions and launch a successful counteroffensive.

The ensuing battle for this critical city, code named Operation Citadel by the Germans, involved as many as 6,000 tanks, 30,000 artillery pieces, 4,000 aircraft and 2 million fighting men and is remembered as the greatest tank battle in history.
